Elon Musk recently expressed his desire to gain more substantial voting control in Tesla.
The news indicates his willingness to consider alternative paths for AI development if his goal of achieving 25% voting control is unmet. Steering the world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer towards new horizons in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics is tricky.
Musk’s Stance on Shareholding and Compensation
Musk holds over 12% of the company as Tesla’s largest shareholder. His recent comments emerged in response to a query on social media about his motivation and the necessity of a substantial compensation package.
He clarified that the delay in formulating a new compensation plan is due to an ongoing shareholder lawsuit concerning a previous $55 billion package, which was groundbreaking at the time.
Musk compared Tesla to a conglomerate of startups, emphasizing its diverse range of innovative projects. This comparison draws attention to Tesla’s unique position in the industry, contrasting sharply with traditional auto giants like General Motors Corp.
The CEO also highlighted Tesla’s advancements in developing the Optimus robot, evidenced by a recent video showcasing significant enhancements to the humanoid prototype.
Investing in the Future: Dojo Supercomputer Project
Tesla’s commitment to innovation extends to its investment of over $1 billion in the Dojo supercomputer project. This venture is pivotal in training the machine-learning models that power Tesla’s autonomous driving systems. Analysts predict that the Dojo project could boost Tesla’s market value by $500 billion, marking a significant leap in the EV maker’s valuation.
During Tesla’s inaugural AI Day in 2021, Musk articulated his vision for Tesla as a leader in real-world AI applications, beyond its identity as an electric car manufacturer. He expressed his unease at the prospect of Tesla advancing in AI and robotics without him having approximately 25% voting control.
Musk reasoned that such a stake would render him influential yet subject to the majority’s decision, safeguarding against potential takeovers by questionable entities.
Challenges and Market Dynamics
Despite Tesla’s innovations and Musk’s ambitious plans, the company’s shares have experienced a 12% decline this year, following a significant surge in 2023. This downturn has erased over $94 billion in market value, reflecting the volatility and challenges faced in the dynamic EV market.
Musk’s journey with Tesla has not been without its complexities. The world’s wealthiest individual grapples with various shareholder concerns. Those range from succession planning to perceptions of being sidetracked by other ventures, notably his acquisition and management of the social media platform X.
Additionally, Tesla has encountered several setbacks, including market reactions to EV policies, competitive pricing in China, and rising labor costs.
