French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI revealed plans on February 11, 2026, to build advanced AI infrastructure in Sweden.
The company will invest €1.2 billion in a new data center, its first major facility outside France. The project marks a step toward greater European control over AI technology.
Partnership with EcoDataCenter
Mistral AI formed a long-term alliance with Swedish operator EcoDataCenter. The partners will construct an AI-optimized data center in Borlänge, Sweden.
EcoDataCenter will design, build, and operate the site. The facility will use renewable energy and advanced cooling systems and will also feature NVIDIA‘s latest-generation Vera Rubin GPUs.
The data center is scheduled to open in 2027, providing large-scale computing power for Mistral’s next-generation AI models.
Focus on European Independence
Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch called the project “a concrete step toward building independent capabilities in Europe, dedicated to AI.” He said it will allow data processing and storage within Europe, strengthening strategic autonomy.
EcoDataCenter CEO Peter Michelson added that the collaboration builds high-performance AI infrastructure with sustainability and European autonomy at its core.
The investment supports a fully European AI stack with all technology and cloud servers remaining in Europe.
