Belgium’s second-largest bank, KBC Group, started offering cryptocurrency trading to retail investors on its Bolero platform beginning from the week of February 16, 2026.
Such a service offered by the bank is compliant with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation and thus represents the first such offering by a major Belgian bank.
This brings private clients into buying and selling within a regulated environment, besides Bitcoin and Ethereum.
KBC has filed a full Crypto-Asset Service Provider notification with the Financial Services and Markets Authority, allowing it to offer these custody and execution services.
How KBC Integrates Crypto With Traditional Banking
With Bolero, clients for the first time can manage cryptocurrencies alongside stocks, bonds, and funds.
The platform is execution only, which means investors make decisions without advice from the bank.
Users first have to pass a knowledge and experience test to ensure they understand the risks before they can trade.
KBC takes care of custody of the digital assets; there is no possibility to send them to the external wallets.
In this closed-loop system, everything is very secure but with limited flexibility. It focuses on investor education and regulatory compliance as part of its approach.
MiCA Framework Drives KBC’s Crypto Entry
The European Union’s MiCA regulatory act, which entered into force from 2024, leads the way regarding the provision of rules regarding the provision of cryptographic services.
This step taken by KBC Group is a good indicator, as the intervener fulfills standards regarding protection, reserves, and money laundering prevention.
KBC’s Chief Innovation Officer, Erik Luts, explained in a release, “We are making innovation concrete and accessible now by providing the opportunity for the purchase and sale of crypto within a regulated environment.
Indeed, this shows increased confidence in the crypto markets by European banks.”
Timeline of KBC’s Crypto Journey
In July 2025, KBC announced its plans, aiming to have the regulator’s approval by this autumn.
In the last months of 2025, the bank submitted the CASP application to FSMA. It received the green light at the beginning of 2026. The launch took place in February.
It begins its service with Bitcoin and Ethereum, the leading cryptocurrencies based on market capitalization.
KBC has not committed to adding more assets but indicated further expansions based on demand and compliance.
What Changes for Belgian Crypto Investors
Till date, the primary means through which retail investors in the Belgo-market have accessed the world of crypto is through international exchanges such as Binance or Coinbase.
The banks in Belgium have been maintaining a ‘wait and see’ approach because of the risks involved with the regulations in the sector.
The entry of KBC Group is
With 4 million customers and $300 billion in assets, KBC could change the playing field.
No details about their services have been offered by their rivals, BNP Paribas Fortis, and ING Belgium.
Broader Shifts in European Finance
KBC’s project reflects the trend in Europe. In Germany, the DZ Bank obtained approval for retail trading of cryptocurrencies based on the MiCA regulatory framework in January 2026.
The French bank Societe Generale launched a stablecoin based on the MiCA framework for tokenized bonds.
MiCA’s harmonized rules give banks an incentive to consider crypto both a shield from fintech challenge and an income-generating asset. Successful adoption stories, such as KBC, might follow.
Next Steps in KBC’s Digital Strategy
The bank will reportedly keep track of user feedback and market trends.
The possible milestones that the bank will achieve include the addition of further cryptocurrencies by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
KBC is also a part of the European consortium that is working on a MiCA-compliant euro stablecoin. It will go live in 2026.
Investors need to be aware of the volatility of cryptocurrencies. About this, KBC says, “Virtual currencies, real risks.
The only guarantee in crypto is risk.” There is no deposit protection, unlike in a normal savings product.
This development puts KBC at the forefront of its sectors by seamlessly integrating banking and blockchain.
As time goes by under MiCA, more innovations like this are expected to emerge.
