Indonesia has opened up its cryptocurrency market by issuing new regulations that enhance security, thus attracting foreign companies.
However, the growth opportunities for this market are hampered by its current regulation structure.
Shift in Regulatory Policy
Cryptocurrency regulations in Indonesia saw a shift in oversight from Bappebti to OJK as of January 10, 2025, this comes as the government has been pushing to fully incorporate digital assets within the monetary system.
OJK released their rules, No. 23/2025, which stated strengthened regulations regarding digital financial assets.
In conjunction, OJK provided a whitelist of 29 approved cryptocurrency platforms, such as Indodax, Tokocrypto, Pintu, Upbit, and Luno.
This serves to ensure that users engage with approved operations while preventing any further danger associated with illegal operations.
Preliminary records obtained through OJK establish that the whitelist serves to establish market trust.
Strong Adoption and Market Scale
It can be seen that Indonesia takes the seventh position in terms of adoption rate among cryptos globally, according to Chainalysis‘ index for 2025, indicating extensive adoption among its residents in particular.
Currently, there are 17 million users in Indonesia who are investors in cryptos as of December 2025, facilitated by Robinhood’s market analysis.
The number of transactions amounted to Rp 650.61 trillion or $40.2 billion in 2024, increasing by 335.9% from the previous year, based on an official statement from Jakarta Globe publication.
Global Companies Enter the Market
Since the industry was encouraged by the upgraded OJK crypto regulation, worldwide crypto exchanges have started to make inroads in Indonesia.
Notably, Robinhood announced on December 7, 2025, its acquisition of PT Buana Capital Sekuritas, a brokerage firm, and PT Pedagang Aset Kripto, a licensed crypto trader.
In particular, its effort to tap Indonesia’s vast potential investors is explained in detail in Robinhood’s press release.
In similar efforts to tap Indonesia’s vast potential investors, OSL Group finalized its acquisition of Koinsayang, a licensed crypto exchange on September 23, 2025, securing necessary licenses for crypto and derivatives transactions.
As OSL confirmed in its press release, its aim is to provide users with tokenized assets and payment services.
Indonesia’s strategy strikes the right balance between innovation and regulation, and it now looks set to contribute to the continued growth of the digital asset market in Southeast Asia.
