Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has tried to meet those growing energy requirements of Google’s AI and cloud operation with a huge acquisition.

Alphabet’s strategy shifts to vertical integration. The parent company of Google purchased Intersect, a data center and energy infrastructure provider, as a way to build power sources alongside data centers.

Deal Terms and What It Includes
Under the definitive agreement, Alphabet will provide $4.75 billion in cash, plus take on debt. The transaction is set to close in the first half of 2026, pending standard conditions.
The acquisition comes along with Intersect’s more than 200 personnel and multiple gigawatts of energy and data center projects in advanced development or construction.
It supports Alphabet’s goal of 24/7 carbon-free energy for industrial-scale needs which excludes existing operating assets in Texas and operating and in-development assets in California.
These would stay with current investors to ensure a smooth transition of operations.

Intersect will operate as an independent brand and will be headed by CEO Sheldon Kimber and will also collaborate closely with the Google infrastructure team.
A deal in energy technologies including advanced geothermal, long-duration energy storage, and gas with carbon capture and storage helps to advance them. This diversifies the supplies for continuous AI and cloud operations.
