Cashfree Payments, one of India’s largest payment gateway firms, is reportedly exploring a strategic sale less than 16 months after closing a major funding round, with listed fintech Pine Labs said to be the front-runner and Paytm also said to be in the picture.
The report, published by VCCircle on April 22, 2026, said the Bengaluru-based company has hired an investment banker to run a sale process.
Neither Cashfree, Pine Labs, nor Paytm has issued a public statement confirming or denying the 2026 report.
The claim that Pine Labs is leading the race is Unverified, resting on a single outlet. The involvement of Paytm is also Unverified, with no second independent source confirming it.
How Cashfree Got Here: Funding, Then a For-Sale Sign
Founded in 2015 by Akash Sinha and Reeju Datta, Cashfree processes more than $80 billion in transactions each year and serves roughly 800,000 businesses, from startups to large enterprises.
On February 5, 2025, the company raised $53 million in a Series C round led by South Korean gaming company Krafton and existing backer Apis Partners.
That deal valued Cashfree at $700 million, according to a source familiar with the terms.
CB Insights records a further $23 million tranche closed on March 18, 2025, though Cashfree has not publicly confirmed that figure.
The reported pivot to a sale, roughly a year after those rounds, marks a sharp shift in stated strategy.
In the February 2025 announcement, CEO Akash Sinha said the funding would “accelerate our key efforts across cross-border and security innovations and international expansion.”
Why This Story Has a Familiar Ring
This is not the first time a Cashfree sale has surfaced as a rumor. In July 2023, reports named Pine Labs, Razorpay, and Stripe as potential buyers. Cashfree rejected those claims directly.
The company told Inc42 at the time that the reports were “completely baseless and misleading” and that “there have been no conversations initiated on this matter whatsoever.”
The same report noted the talks stalled over valuation, with Cashfree seeking $1.2 billion and interested parties unwilling to go above $600 million.
Those denials, and the wide valuation gap described in 2023, are material context for evaluating the April 2026 report. No evidence has emerged that the gap has closed.
What Pine Labs and Paytm Are Juggling Right Now
Pine Labs, which listed on Indian exchanges in November 2025, carries a market capitalization of roughly $1.87 billion.
The company has been active on the acquisitions front: its board approved the purchase of checkout platform Shopflo Technologies for ₹88 crore in April 2026.
A Cashfree deal would be far larger, raising questions about balance sheet capacity and integration complexity for a newly listed company.
Paytm, meanwhile, is navigating its own turbulence. The Reserve Bank of India cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank on April 24, 2026, citing repeated regulatory non-compliance.
While Paytm says its core app and payment gateway remain operational, the added complexity of absorbing a gateway competitor at this moment appears significant.
What Comes Next
No regulatory filings, term sheets, or official disclosures have been located to confirm that talks are active.
Cashfree’s holders, including Krafton, Apis Partners, Y Combinator, and State Bank of India, have not commented publicly. Absent official confirmation, this remains a developing story.
Any formal transaction involving a listed acquirer such as Pine Labs would require stock exchange disclosure under SEBI Regulation 30. No such disclosure has been filed as of May 25, 2026.
